Pixar's latest animated masterpiece following the adventures of a rat called Remy who has dreams of becoming a chef has just been released locally and to coincide with this, we have the game of the same name that casts you as Remy as he journeys on his way to achieve culinary greatness. Ratatouille follows Remy's adventures from his humble beginnings in rural France all the way to the bright lights of the city of Paris.

Along the way you're tasked with missions that call on your platforming skills as you must lead Remy from one objective to the next. Remy is as nimble as you'd expect from a rat and you can run, jump, swing from ledges and use your nose to sniff out where you need to go to. As Ratatouille is aimed at a younger audience the goals and objectives in the game are simple and easy to grasp. There are no frustrating moments where the controls are awkward, so your progress through the games is smooth and it whips along nice and fast.

To fit in with the gastronomic theme of the movie you even get to help Remy prepare some dishes using ingredients at certain points in the game. For some reason though there are very rudimentary stealth sections interspersed throughout the game and these don't work very well in the overall context of Ratatouille.

When an enemy spots you, they have a gauge that fills up as you move. Fill it up totally and they'll attack you. Stop moving and the gauge depletes. The problem is that you end up inching your way forwards for ages and this just makes the gameplay needlessly frustrating for younger gamers.

The cut scenes in Ratatouille are great-looking and manage to look like they've come straight from the Pixar studios.

The characters manage to look like they've stepped straight out of the movie and it helps add that little bit extra to the game. As for the actual in game graphics? They're a bit of a mixed bag. Remy and the other rats look nearly as good as they do in the cut scenes and are animated convincingly enough as they run and jump around the levels, but the environments and other characters can vary from average to exceedingly shocking in the looks department.

The music too manages to stick closely to what you'd expect from the film and there's the requisite sound effects. All in all, the sound in Ratatouille is passable without ever excelling.

Ratatouille is an average enough children's game that sticks closely to the movie and will wile away a few hours. If you're looking for a way to keep the kids occupied for a short while you can't go far wrong with Ratatouille. Jacob Zuma pleads poverty, but his clan is willing to help.
