The dairy has an excellent selection of milk products including some of the best drinking yogurts Not to be missed - delicious cheese in an authentic, traditional setting - with caring service and This responsibility is heightened by two young boys trying to come to grips with the facts of where their bacon comes from! We visited last Sunday and Gay kindly allowed the boys into the milking parlour. They stood below the row of stately ladies and pressed their hands to the glass jars collecting the milk.
My youngest asked me whether the cows decided whether to make the milk chocolate or strawberry all in all it was a great experience - and we went home with some amazing deli items and a greater awareness. We happened to stumble across the tasting which was about to commence. The tasting was badly executed with no explanation on how the cheese was made and how it differs from the previous cheese tasted and how it can be paired with food and wine.
You need to check times open. The cheese tasting generated a lot of sales and the queue and payment was a bit clunky and rushed. The owners need to tidy-up, streamline and improve the tasting area, display fridge and milking and turn area for this to be a really worthwhile experience to match the great cheeses. Very interesting to find a Guernsey dairy herd in the Karoo.
These cows supply excellent milk which the dairy turns into yoghurt and cheeses. Good value plus excellent steak and lamb. Stock up for the braai! The staff at the dairy were friendly helpful. The cheese tasting resulted in us purchasing a considerable number of items. Good supply of yoghurt, cheeses and selective Karoo meat.

Raymond and Daniel Trumble-Stazzone, who are 32 and 30 respectively, live with their two children, year-old Jacob and 9-year-old Cody, on four acres of farmland in Hastings, New York. They share their four acres with twelve goats, two llamas, four sheep, nearly two dozen chickens, one dozen ducks, six turkeys, and bees. Both gushed over their lives at Mighty Whimp Farms when asked how farm life was treating them. Though the family is happily entrenched at Mighty Whimp Farms now, however, the couple explained it was quite the process that got them there.
How, exactly, did this gay farming family come to be? Whimp Farms Goat Milk Soaps. Their story, Daniel warned me, was about to get cheesier. It took a little bit for him to wrap his mind around it, but eventually he was cool with it. After Daniel and Raymond got their first salaried jobs — Daniel working for an affordable housing non-profit, and Raymond as a school teacher — the two decided to leave behind the small town of Hastings for their first apartment in Syracuse.
It was around the time of their move to Syracuse that Raymond and Daniel began talking about starting their family. Initially, the couple considered surrogacy, and even had a good friend offer to serve as their surrogate. They became discouraged, however, after conducting some initial research. Or she loses the baby?
Or becomes too emotionally attached? So the two began to consider adoption, an option they also soon grew frustrated with. Eventually, Daniel and Raymond began to consider foster care.
They were afraid of some of the consequences of becoming foster parents. What if the couple grew too attached to the children? They also worried that it would be difficult to find younger children through the foster care system. Their perspective quickly changed, however, after the couple met their first foster care children, a sibling group of six girls. The oldest two girls, who were 12 and 13, were originally opposed to joining their sisters. But as the year went by, and the older girls saw how happy and healthy their siblings were, they started to come visit from time to time as well.
Just as they suspected, Daniel and Raymond grew close to these girls, and hoped the sisters would eventually join their family full time. To help accommodate this rather large increase in family size, the couple started to look for another house in Syracuse that would be large enough to house them all.
Daniel, who had begun working in real estate at this time, quickly sold their first apartment and helped the family move into a different and larger one, a beautiful Victorian. In the middle of this move, however, the girls were called back to their home.
I was an emotional wreck for a little bit. However, just as Daniel and Raymond were excitedly setting up their first meeting with Jacob and Cody, they got another call from the agency.
This development presented the couple with an incredibly difficult decision. But how was the young family getting along, then? Raymond told an anecdote by way of example. And I wanted to be a dad! The agency was honest with us from the beginning and said that just might not ever happen. I can call one of you dad and the other daddy! Adoption Day.
Top row: Daniel and Raymond; bottom row: Cody and Jacob. By the time Jacob and Cody joined their family, the couple had already discussed the possibility of moving to the farm. They had been experimenting with some urban gardening at their home in Syracuse, but dreamed of moving their family to land where they could grow crops on a larger scale, and maybe have some animals.
So, in what would be the fifth move for the young couple, they began looking at farmland where they could make this dream come true. It suddenly became very clear to the couple where they would be moving to next.
We moved, and the house needed a lot of cleaning and final touches. Eventually, the couple hopes to turn the farming venture into their full time jobs. But in the meantime, both are continuing to work full time — Daniel as a realtor, while Raymond is completing his certification to be a principal or superintendent in the Syracuse area.
Winter on Whimp Farms. From left to right: Jacob, Raymond, Daniel and Cody. Overall, both Daniel and Raymond say they have faced no major issues being openly gay dads in Hastings, New York. Still, the couple took precautions as they began to set up their new life at Mighty Whimp Farms.
In particular, Daniel and Raymond wanted to ensure the kids were looked out for at their new school, particularly their youngest child, Cody, who identifies as a boy who likes girl stuff. So when the day finally came, our stomachs were in knots. If anything, the couple feels safer raising their kids in Hastings, where they know all of their neighbors. Back in Syracuse, the couple had a nice house with a backyard and a park nearby where the kids would play.
Both of us! In the city, we really had to keep our eye on the kids all the time. Anyone could walk by or drive by. The couple also provides a range of products that are partially geared towards the LGBT community. Progressive schools? Rainbow chicken eggs? But before I packed my bags, I wanted the couple to level with me. Like, do they even have Uber up there?
In Syracuse, we were three miles from the regional market. You had local candlemakers, cheesemakers. He then recalled a recent New Year's where he had bought a round of drinks to celebrate.
And I was like, this is amazing! Yes, their farmland is beautiful, the school system is great, and the drinks are cheap. Daniel and Raymond do, however, have one other pressing motivation for opting for the large farmhouse over a small New York City brownstone. Having kids is an amazing part of life, and it should be fun. Life does tend to get in the way sometimes, and one huge aspect of that is work.
Striking that balance between work and home life is tough. If you both work it's even harder. And if you're a gay couple, it can have it's own set of problems above and beyond the standard work-life issues that people face.
When we first found out that our second daughter was African American I froze. So I frantically tried to learn as much as I could while she was a newborn so I was ready to style it when she was a little older. Episodes will solely be dedicated to learning how to wash, care for and styling African American hair. I'd love your support and become part of our little village as we launch this new project! After his 14 year relationship ended, Richard got a gentle push into the dating pool from an unexpected source — his son!
In , Richard Rothman's relationship of 15 years ended, leaving him understandably reluctant to jump back into the world of dating as a single gay dad. But after spending one too many Friday nights at home, he got a gentle nudge from somebody unexpected —his teenaged son, Jonathan.

Married Argentinian couple Damian Pighin and Ariel Vijarra opened their home to a day-old baby when others wouldn't. A couple weeks ago, we brought you a touching story about a gay single dad who adopted a young girl with Down's syndrome who had been passed over by 20 other families.
Well, we're beginning to sense a heartwarming trend among gay men and their openness to kids who might be a little bit different. The baby had reportedly been rejected by 10 other families who refused to adopt her because of her status. According to Newsweek , one of the dads told local media: "As soon as I saw her, I felt she was part of my life. The connection was immediate. We held her in our arms, we gave her the bottle and she looked at us with her eyes wide open, without crying.
The couple is no stranger to helping "hard to place" kids find homes. They created a nonprofit organization called Acunar Familias, or "Cradle Families," which helps other couples adopt unwanted children. Many in the LGBTQ community have faced rejection of their own, so it should come as little surprise that queer parents will provide loving homes when others won't — we guarantee this won't the last story of its kind you'll read. Check out these dads who've slayed Halloween every year with their ghoulishly imaginative skills!
New Yorkers David and Brian said their dreams of fatherhood crystalized only after receiving a "ton of information" at a Men Having Babies conference. New Yorkers David F. Vaughn 39, and Brian Becker, 37, are new dads. Brian's siblings are adopted, and while they still want to make adoption part of their family journey, certain opportunities arose that made their surrogacy decision easier.
How did you start the process? Did you always know that you wanted to foster older kids?
