Considering the growing activities in the field of medical and healthcare ethics in Iran 8 , 9 , and in order to address the needs and help to fulfill goals of health care system in the country, the National Code of Ethics for Nurses was prepared under supervision of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education MOHME. The goal of this paper is to provide the nurses with the information about the National Code and help them to apply the provisions in their profession.

The manuscript will introduce the main concepts of the recently published codes. A working group composed of 3 nurses and one general practitioner prepared the first draft of the code through a study including the wide search of international and national codes of ethics for nurses in other countries.

The codes should be revised and updated in regular intervals considering reflections from nurses across the country. It is noteworthy that, this could not be accomplished without dedication and sincere contribution of university lecturers, researchers, and experts in the field.

While cooperating and coordinating with other individuals, groups and social institutions, try to address social needs and resolve ethical issues raised in the area of health care. Pay special attention to vulnerable groups and individuals such as children, elderly, people with physical disability, mental illness, and so on. The Nurse's Code of Ethics contains guidelines and principles to help nurse's handle difficult patient situations. The Nurse's Code of Professional Conduct, also known as the Nurse's Code of Ethics, is a compilation of ethical rules designed to guide the nurse in making the correct decision in difficult patient-care situations.

The Code contains nine provisions, each dealing with a different area of patient care. Nurses must adhere to the Code throughout all interactions with patients, colleagues and other health-care providers. Provision one requires the nurse to maintain patient dignity throughout all interactions and courses of treatment.

The nurse must treat the patient with care and compassion transcending all individual differences. The nurse must treat all patients equally regardless of their illness or condition. Nurses must help patients regain as much strength and individuality as possible, recognizing the patient's need for self-determination and independence.

Provision two encapsulates the principle that the patient is the nurse's primary concern and she must work to directly advance the patient's best interests in every situation. Sometimes, a nurse will find herself in a conflict of interest with the family, another health-care provider or the patient's health insurance provider.

For example, some providers may encourage nurses to cut costs or take measures not calculated to be in the patient's best interests. If any conflict of interest arises, the nurse must disclose the conflict to the patient to the best of her ability.

Provision two also requires nurses to work positively with other members of the patient's health-care team by participating in health-care decisions and evaluations. It is also mandates that the nurse maintain appropriate patient-nurse boundaries. Provision three begins with the notion that patients have a right to confidentiality and privacy.

The nurse must make certain that information about the patient is not disseminated to any person or party in violation of HIPPA or other privacy laws. The nurse must safeguard patient records and information and must block any unnecessary patient intrusions. If a patient is to participate in medical research, the nurse must ensure that the patient is fully informed of this and is aware that he is being studied.

Nurses in a leadership role must review all licensure requirements for the staff and make certain that subordinate nurses are maintaining their license to practice nursing. Nurses are under a duty to report illegal or unlawful conduct by any member of the health-care team.

If a nurse suspects impairment by any health-care provider, she must report this information to the appropriate authorities. Under provision four, nurses are accountable and responsible for their actions. This includes a situation in which a nurse delegates a task to another nurse. The nurse is answerable for all judgment calls, including direct care, delegation, teaching, research and administration. Provision five explains that the nurse owes the same duties to herself as she does to her patients.

This includes the duty to treat herself with dignity and morality while striving for professional growth. The nurse must make a commitment to become a lifelong learner and always stay abreast of changing or emerging issues in the nursing profession. This provision details the notion that nurses have personal and professional parts of her character that are closely integrated and she should always maintain a wholeness of character. If a nurse is ever placed in a compromising position in violation of her moral or ethical duties, she has a duty to object.

Provision six describes the nurse's duty to influence the environment around her to promote moral values and quality health care.

The nurse has a responsibility to create, maintain and contribute to environments advancing virtue and excellence to enable nurses to fulfill each ethical obligation. The nurse must contribute positively to the health-care environment to encourage productive interaction among all members of the health-care team.

Provision seven requires the nurse to advance the profession by contributing to practice, policy, education, administration and knowledge development. This requires serving in leadership or mentorship roles, participation in civic activities or involvement in government initiatives. The nurse should also involve herself in scholarly inquiries to enhance her body of knowledge. Provision eight requires the nurse to actively engage in corroboration with health professionals in the public sector to maintain awareness of local, national and global health-care issues.

The nurse should be aware of global hunger, environmental concerns, pollution, lack of health care, violations of human rights and disproportionate access to health care services around the world. The nurse must always avoid imposition of her cultural values upon others.
