I Almost Don't Recognize Him

Nicky began therapy with the school last fall. At that point he barely said 10 words and those words had to be coaxed out of him. He had a plethora of sensory issues, social problems and gross motor skill set backs. He was scoring borderline on the Autism Spectrum as well.

Fast forward several months later and I now have a son that doesn’t resemble the one I knew last year. His speech has come so far. He now talks non stop and has more words than I can count. Most of his sensory issues have melted away completely, he is social and has a few close friends that he already says he misses and his gross motor skills have improved.

We had a meeting with his teachers today to speak about his progress and our plan for 2008 school year. The plan and their goals sound right on track of what I’d like to see. His teachers are really sweet people who are genuinely impressed and excited with his progress and rave about how smart he is. It’s always nice to hear great words about your child from people who aren’t related to you. (lol)

I walked away from the meeting with pages of activities to do with him over the summer to help him with his speech and with phone numbers of his friends so they can meet up for play dates over the summer.

I still can’t get over how far he’s come. I can’t get over how grown up he has become. His own little person complete with best friends…when did he turn into a child and grow out of being a baby? I’m not sure when it happened, but I am so proud of the little person he has grown into.

Oh and his “main” teacher, Mrs. Prell, gave him a book that her son owned and read as a child. She said the book is over 30 years old now. I thought that was so sweet of her to give to Nicky. It really touched me and I’ll be sure we take good care of it.

Nell that's so awesome to hear about how far Nicky has come. It's crazy how fast they grow and turn into their own little 'independent' person.

Way to go Nicky!

It truly is a neat thing to watch your child bloom. My son is autistic and had many many sensory issues. But now he talks non stop just like your son. All the teachers at school keep asking me how old is he. He's too small to be three. LOL. They all know his name and everyone of them make him feel special.
